When Apple Silicon users need Rosetta to run Intel-only After Effects plugins — and when they don't.
Apple Silicon Macs (M1/M2/M3/M4) run native ARM apps by default. Older After Effects plugins built exclusively for Intel processors won't load in a native ARM host — you'll see errors like "This effect is not compatible with this version of After Effects."
Rosetta 2 is Apple's translation layer that lets Intel apps run on Apple Silicon. Running After Effects through Rosetta allows Intel-only plugins to work, but at a performance cost — translation adds overhead. Only use Rosetta when you genuinely need a plugin that has no native Apple Silicon build.
.app — not a desktop shortcut — and choose Get Info.sudo softwareupdate --install-rosetta --agree-to-licenseAE 2024+ and Intel Macs won't show this option — on those systems Rosetta is either unavailable or unnecessary.
After Effects 2021 and older will not launch on macOS 14 (Sonoma) or later. If you're on a recent macOS, you need AE 2022 or newer. The tradeoff: AE 2022–2023 still support Rosetta for Intel plugins. AE 2024+ does not. Pick the newest AE that runs both your macOS and your required plugins.
BCC, Crossphere Bokeh, Deep Glow, Dehancer, Element 3D, FilmConvert Nitrate, Glitchify, Magic Bullet Looks, Modulation, Omino, Optical Flares, Pixel Sorter, RSMB, Saber, Sapphire, Signal, Trapcode, Twixtor, Universe, and VFX Suite all have native Apple Silicon builds for current versions.
Twitch and Shooter Suite are discontinued and remain Intel-only. If Rosetta isn't available on your AE version, these plugins won't work. Scripts and CEP extensions are unaffected by architecture.
Confirm you toggled Rosetta on the actual .app bundle (not a shortcut). Fully quit AE and reopen. On AE 2024+, Rosetta won't help — you need a native plugin build or an older AE version.
Expected — translation adds overhead. Upgrade to Apple Silicon-native plugin builds and run AE natively for best performance.
